How we became Toronto's go-to firm for corporate law that actually makes sense
Back in 2014, I'd just wrapped up another grueling merger case at one of those massive downtown firms where you're basically a cog in a machine. Don't get me wrong - I learned tons there - but something felt off. Clients were getting passed around like files, and nobody seemed to actually care about what kept these business owners up at night.
So I took a leap. Started StratoContour with nothing but a decent laptop, way too much coffee, and this wild idea that corporate law didn't have to be cold and impersonal. Sure, the first year was rough - I'm talking ramen-for-dinner rough - but we got through it by actually listening to our clients instead of just billing hours.
Fast forward to today, we've handled over 400 corporate cases, helped dozens of startups get off the ground, and yeah, we still answer our phones after 5pm because real business problems don't clock out at quitting time.
Founded StratoContour in a cramped office above a coffee shop on King Street. Just me, an intern who worked for course credit, and a borrowed fax machine that jammed constantly. Our first client? A tech startup that couldn't afford the big firms but needed serious contract help.
Won our first major commercial litigation case - a David vs. Goliath situation where we represented a mid-sized manufacturer against a Fortune 500 company. That victory put us on the map and taught us that being smaller sometimes means being hungrier and smarter.
Moved to our current Bay Street location and brought on three senior associates who actually share our values. Also pivoted hard during the pandemic - helped over 50 businesses navigate employment law nightmares and contract disputes when everything went sideways.
Now we're a team of 12 professionals handling everything from M&A deals to intellectual property battles. We've kept that original mission though - treat clients like people, not file numbers. And yeah, we still answer calls after hours.
Legal work isn't about fancy jargon or intimidating opponents with thousand-page briefs. It's about understanding what you need, finding the smartest path forward, and making sure you're protected without breaking the bank. That's been our approach from day one, and it's not changing anytime soon.
These aren't buzzwords we slapped on a wall - they're principles we actually live by every single day.
No hidden fees or confusing bills
Real people answering real questions
Outcomes matter more than billable hours
Doing right by clients always
Smart solutions, not old playbooks
The folks who'll actually be working on your case - not just names on letterhead.
